The Old Spanish National Historic Trail was established by Congress in It has often been referred to as the most arduous, difficult trail in the United States. Its designated routes cover six states and some 2, miles, traversing mountains, deserts, rivers, and coastal valleys. It was historically used by curious and brave, enterprising.

The National Trails System was created by the National Trails System Act (Pub.L. 90–, 82 Stat. , enacted October 2, ), codified at 16 U.S.C. § et seq.. The Act created a series of National trails "to promote the preservation of, public access to, travel within, and enjoyment and appreciation of the open-air, outdoor areas and historic resources of the Nation.".   National Historic Trails paint a colorful picture of our nation’s diverse history. These trails follow past routes of exploration, migration, struggle, trade, and military action. National Historic Trails offer the opportunity to re-trace these past events through historic sites, points of interests, trail segments, and waterways. Since the designation of the Appalachian and Pacific Crest National Scenic Trails as the first two components, the System has grown to include 20 national trails.
