Elimination of commercial grazing has been an important goal since the establishment of the National Park Service. In 8 of 11 wilderness parks in the System in , commercial grazing of sheep, cattle, and horses was practiced. Only one of these areas is so used today; more t animal grazing months have been eliminated. THE NATIONAL PARK wilderness looking to the future For the first time in its history, the National Park Service has in action a program broad enough to permit effective long-range planning, on a scale large enough to overtake today's problems and to prepare for future ones before they develop. The National Park Service is now engaged in a year improvement program called MISSION It includes protection and preservation, park use and management, and, compared with very meager improvements of recent years, a sizeable development program.
